Industry Dismay at Government Deceit
The Government’s energy policy made headline news on Monday with the Guardian expose that Government are trying to ‘wriggle’ out of binding EU targets. The front page article, briefing document and editorial can be found on the Guardian website.

European Commission is confident the UK ‘will deliver’ on its renewable commitments
In response to claims that the UK will not meet the mandatory EU targets the European Commission has said it is confident that the UK will honour commitments to increase renewable energy sources.       

Met Office makes 2014 forecast
The Met Office Hadley Centre unveiled the first decadal climate prediction model in a paper by climate scientists, published in the journal Science on 10 August 2007. The paper includes the Met Office's prediction for annual global temperature to 2014.

Zero Carbon Homes in 10 Years?
An agreement with house-builders and councils was announced by Housing Minister Yvette Cooper, on 8th August, which aims to make zero carbon housing within 10 years a reality. The Housing Minister urged other industry partners to 'sign the green pledge' which can be done via email to the Communities and Local Government Department.

Green building boost
The Chartered Institute of Building published ‘The Green Perspective’ report which reveals that over 94 per cent of construction professionals believe that ‘green’ building is the future for the construction industry.

The Merton Rule – an uncertain future
The British Property Federation and the Home Builders Federation have been reported as expressing support for government proposals to effectively abolish the Merton Rule. This planning policy established by the London Borough of Merton is now being adopted by nearly 150 Local Planning Authorities and at least 4 Regional Planning Authorities. The policy specifies renewable energy targets for major developments usually to meet around 10% of the buildings energy requirements.

Farmers predict food prises will continue to rise
The Farmers Guardian predicts further rises, as much as 16%, in food prices as the surge in demand for crops, partly derived from the increase in demand for biofuels, combined with difficult weather and stock levels, means supply will struggle to catch up with demand.

Draft Climate Change Bill is published
The Joint House of Lords and House of Commons Committee Report on the  Draft Climate Change Bill, published last week, retains its main aim to reduce the net UK carbon account by at least 60% from the 1990 baseline by 2050.

2007 UK Energy Statistics Published
DBERR have published the 2007 Digest of UK Energy Statistics. This publication provides comprehensive data for 2006 and an account of trends in energy supply and demand in the United Kingdom. Additionally DBERR also published data for 2006 Energy Consumption in the UK.
